"SMART TANNING" WITH SLICK ROCK TANNING & SPA

Tanning is your body's natural defense against sunburn. It's what your body was designed to do! But going from a body of sun-deprived skin to a gorgeous, natural tan isn't always foolproof. That's why we educate our tanners with what we call "Smart Tanning."What, you may ask, is the golden rule of smart tanning? Simple: Don't ever burn!At Slick Rock Tanning & Spa, we use a process called skin-typing to determine which category your skin falls under. This allows us to determine a proper exposure schedule for your skin type, including determining which equipment and lotions will work best for you. We aim to deliver the results you want in the time frame you need while doing our best to help you avoid the unnecessary discomfort and damage to your skin that comes with sunburn. How long does it take to get a tan? Depending on your skin type, your natural tanning ability, and what tanning equipment you use, you may start to see results after your very first session. In conventional beds (non-HP), it usually takes between 8-10 sessions to develop a base tan. In a High Pressure bed, you can go from zero to tan in 3 to 5 sessions. What is High Pressure?A High Pressure tanning session is 6-10 times stronger than a session in a conventional bed. This is because the specially designed lamps in high pressure beds, like the Open Sun 1050, produce UVA and UVB in different ratios compared to conventional beds. High pressure beds use just a small amount of UVB to stimulate melanin production and a much higher concentration of UVA to really oxidize that melanin and turn it a golden brown. The lower UVB output of the Open Sun 1050 means that it doesn't cause as much drying of the skin, nor does it accelerate the exfoliation process as in conventional tanning. The result is a deeper, darker, and longer lasting tan. How does the tanning process work? There are three components that make the tanning process work: UVA, UVB, and oxygen. UVB starts the tanning process by stimulating the tanning cells (melanocytes) to produce melanosomes which contain the melanin (pigment). UVA darkens the melanin that has been produced, but before that can happen, melanin needs a certain amount of oxygen that can facilitate the UVA. The third component, oxygen, comes from blood vessels beneath the skin and varoius elements outside the skin. The tanning process can be optimized through the use of professional indoor tanning lotions and moisturizers. Why should I use a tanning lotion?Skin that is fortified with an appropriate indoor tanning lotion tans quicker, darker, and more evenly. Healthy skin is the foundation of a successful tan. Indoor tanning lotions are designed to provide critical moiturizers and added benefits to your skin. Those who avoid using tanning products will not get the moisturizers, amino acids, antioxidants, and vitamins that their skin needs to gain and maintain a dark and even tone.Why does a tan fade?A tan occurs in the outermost layer of your skin, called the epidermis. Cells in the epidermis are constantly reproducing and pushing other cells upward toward the surface of your skin where they are eventually sloughed off. This process occurs naturally every 28-30 days. As your skin replaces its cells, the cells laden with melanin are removed. Therefore, a tan can only be maintained with repeated exposure to UV light. Why is indoor tanning better than outdoor?Speed. Control. Climate. Convenience. It doesn't take all day to get a tan indoors. Depending on your skin type, just a few minutes, not hours. Indoor tanning provides a controlled environment. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to monitor and scientifically control your UVA and UVB exposure so that you tan, not burn. Outdoor tanning is often limited by season, location, and weather. Whether it's overcast, rainy, or 90 degrees in the shade, you never have to worry about the weather with your pleasant, climate-controlled environment. Be safe. Tan smart. Lips don't produce melanin and, therefore, cannot tan so it's always a good idea to wear lip balm with SPF when you are tanning. We provide a lip balm to all of our tanners for this reason. Eyelids are too thin to block out UV light, so wearing protective eyewear is a must! Eyewear must be certified and approved by the FDA. We offer a selection of goggles that meet federal regulations. You can avoid "racoon eyes" by gently adjusting your goggles while you tan, but never remove them completely. When you tan outdoors, you are exposed to uncontrolled and often excessive amounts of multi-frequency UV that can cause sunburn and permanent damage, so when you are outside, always wear appropriate protection. Finally, some medications may cause you to become photosensitive, so if you are taking any medications, please let your doctor know you are tanning.

IF YOU NEED TO BE EXQUISITELY TANNED IN AN INSTANT, HERE'S THE ANSWER

Sunless tanning delivers flawless bronzing results (no orange!) and is the perfect way to achieve an instant glow for special occasions such as weddings, vacations, birthdays, school dances, senior photos, or just for fun! Many people combine sunless and UV tanning in order to receive the instant gratification of a natural glow and still enjoy the benefits of UV exposure (increased Vitamin D production, mood enhancement, and a natural barrier against sunburn). Sunless tanning is a great alternative for those with Skin Type I who cannot achieve a tan naturally but still crave that gorgeous, bronze color. Enhance your skin's appearance with a stunning glow, camouflage cellulite and varicose veins, and look instantly thinner with a sunless tan!How does sunless tanning work?DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is the “Master Ingredient” used in all sunless tanning solutions. DHA is a sugar-based compound derived from raw sugar cane and fermented glycerin. It has been approved by the FDA for use in sunless tanning applications since the 1970's. When DHA is applied to the skin, it reacts with amino acids in the epidermis (outermost layer) to produce a tan. Keep in mind, the tan is cosmetic only and does not provide any protection against sunburn.What to expect during your sunless tanning session:The application will take approximately 15 minutes as we meticulously hand-spray the solution onto your body. When your session is complete, you will see immediate results. This is because of the bronzer in the sunless solution that is used to ensure a thorough application. The bronzer will wash off when you shower for the first time, but this will not affect your sunless tan which develops underneath the bronzer.Preparing for your sunless tan:Before your sunless tanning session, you should exfoliate your entire body. Exfoliation will remove dead skin that would otherwise flake off and helps to promote even coverage and lengthen the duration of your tan. Do not use products that contain oil and avoid using Dove soap. It is best to shave at least 8 hours before your appointment. Do not apply moisturizer, oil, perfume, or deodorant before your session. These products can prevent the sunless solution from contacting the skin and adversely affect the development of your tan. The same applies to wearing make-up. Your skin must be thoroughly clean to ensure a proper application of the sunless solution.What to wear:Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing and flip-flops or sandals to/from your sunless tanning appointment. During your session, you are welcome to wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Some clients prefer to wear a bathing suit or undergarments and others go nude. The sunless solution washes out of most clothing very easily but tends to stain wool, silk, and nylon materials. We also have disposable undergarments available.After your sunless tan:Wait at least 6-8 hours to shower or bathe. The longer you wait, the longer your tan has to develop. When you do shower, do not be alarmed if there is color washing down the drain as it is only the temporary bronzer. Swimming in chlorine, excessive sweating, Jacuzzi use, etc. may adversely affect your sunless tan. Maintenance:Your sunless tan will last between 5-7 days. The way the tan fades and the length of time it lasts is dependent on your natural rate of exfoliation, how often you moisturize, and the types of products you use. Well-hydrated skin is essential in prolonging the life of your sunless tan. Moisturize at least twice daily to extend the life of your sunless tan.
