Frequently Asked Questions

Float therapy, or flotation, is the practice of lying back effortlessly in one of our world-leading floatation pods and drifting into a blissful, deep, meditative state that rejuvenates and revives your mind and body. The floatation experience is delivered through a super-saturated Epsom-salt solution, 10" deep and containing 1200lbs of magnesium-rich Epsom-salts. The solution is heated to skin temperature (96°F) and the environment in the tank is controlled so that the air is also skin temperature. Once you are settled, it is impossible to tell which parts of your body are in the water and which are not. This creates an environment similar to that of the Dead Sea but without the sensation of temperature or movement, which lets you float effortlessly on the surface of the water, enjoying a feeling of total freedom & weightlessness! Our float pods are specifically designed to block out all external distractions including sight, sound, tactile sensations, and gravity. This environment brings long-lasting and transformational experiences. Floating has become increasingly popular as more people have learned about floatation therapy’s remarkable benefits. Your first float might feel like magic, however floatation therapy is the result of thirty years of mainstream scientific research in human performance and wellness. Best of all, the effects of floatation are cumulative – the more often you float, the better it is for your health, happiness, and performance.

Research consistently demonstrates that floatation therapy has a significant impact on mood enhancement. Suggested reasons for this increased level of happiness include elevated levels of dopamine and endorphins, through to the deep meditative state achieved during floatation therapy. The National Institute of Health (NIH) supports meditation as a means for lowering blood pressure, easing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and more. Research from fMRI studies shows that meditating causes activity in parts of the brain associated with attention and decreases activity in the amygdala, which is responsible for our flight or fight response. The latest floatation therapy research shows that during floatation, the amygdala basically shuts off, ‘turning down’ anxiety in the brain. The more you float, the better you get at achieving this state. Floating delivers the deepest of meditative states to those who are not experts in meditation, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits. Floatation can specifically be used to target pain and trauma. Studies have shown floatation to successfully relieve the painful symptoms associated with PTSD, relieve the strenuous elements of pregnancy and help with chronic migraines. Simply put, floating calms our overly stimulated systems and restores the body’s chemical and metabolic balance.

The high saline content of the floatation environment ensures that nothing harmful can survive within the tank. The water within the tank is automatically filtered between each customer (and 24-hours a day when not in use). The water is filtered through a 1 micron pool filter (that’s 1/100th the diameter of a human hair!) and is sanitized with a small amount of disinfectant and UV light.

Epsom salt is actually magnesium sulphate, a pure, time-tested mineral compound with dozens of uses. Health benefits include soothing muscle aches, reducing inflammation and treating sunburn.

Many clients do fall asleep in the pods, either purposely, or due to the deep relaxation. Just one hour of floating is equivalent to 2-3 hours of deep sleep. Many of our clients who suffer from insomnia or jet lag get immense relief from floating.

We provide white fluffy towels, earplugs, organic shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, and a packet of Vaseline to protect any small cuts or scrapes. What you need to bring: any personal toiletries such as hand or face creams and a comb if required. If you wear contacts, it is always a good idea to bring contact solution and a case to store your contact lenses. Swimsuits: many people ask us if they need to bring something to wear in the pod. You have your own private room so we suggest floating without anything on to be completely free – but it is up to you!

Of course. Just follow the same process you would for swimming.

The more regularly you float the better. Just like any activity, the more you practice the better you become, and the more cumulative effects you will see.

Please inform us of all health conditions. If you have a heart condition or wear a pacemaker, asthma, allergies (particularly to salt, bromine or magnesium), or very low blood pressure – we recommend that you seek approval from a medical practitioner before floating. If you suffer from epilepsy or schizophrenia, we’re sorry but you cannot float as it is too risky. If you have an ear infection you should wait until it is cleared up and then make sure you use the earplugs provided. If your health condition changes at any point, please let us know.

People with claustrophobia consistently report no problems with floating. You’re always in control of your environment and can choose to float with the pod open and room lights on.

The high buoyancy of the water makes it impossible for the individual to go beneath the surface. Once settled it even becomes difficult to touch the bottom of the pod with your hand just beneath you.

Most people don’t wear anything when floating, and this is what we recommend as well. Anything you wear while floating will become heavy with Epsom salt and cause a distraction during your float.

Not only is it safe but it’s encouraged! Some say floating is “a pregnancy must!” Floating allows you to escape the added stress and weight of pregnancy by being in a weightless environment, taking the strain off of your body. We have also heard testimonies that it is an awesome way to bond with your baby.

You must be over the age of 16 (children under the age of 16 are not permitted to float due to health and safety requirements).
